Help children get equal opportunities, become a mentor
Become a home mentor for a student for equal opportunities for every child!
About School’s cool Amsterdam:
School’s cool Amsterdam has been linking students to a volunteer home mentor since 1997. These students grow up in a living environment with limited opportunities due to, for example, loneliness or poverty. The goal is to use opportunities in life for these students and thus contribute to an equal society. In the current era, in which inequality of opportunity continues to increase, School’s cool mission is more relevant than ever: equal opportunities for every child.
What will you do:
As a volunteer, you guide a student between the ages of 9 and 14 in his/her (home) environment in everything that is important for the school results and the well-being of the student. You support a student by being there for her/him, listening to what she/he is up against and looking for possibilities and solutions together. You work together on the school career and the personal development of the student.
For whom:
This concerns students who, for various reasons, have difficulty with the transition to further education and for whom the transition can therefore be risky. This includes:
- Children with a language or arithmetic deficit;
- Children with limited support from their immediate environment;
- Children with a background in bullying or other social indicators;
- Children with parents who are not familiar with the Dutch school system.
What do you get in return:
A challenging, independent role in which you can develop yourself and/or share your experience. Offer of various training courses, workshops and intervision meetings. Contact with other enthusiastic mentors during the (optional) meetings. At School’s cool Amsterdam, mentors of all ages (from 18 to 80 years old) work with the most diverse backgrounds and work experience.
A deepening of yourself and social involvement. Perhaps you want to develop yourself further as a (children’s) coach, are following a related study in education, social services, psychology or anthropology and want to gain experience. And/or you want to use your (life) experience to help a child. Whatever your motivation, you get a lot in return: the bond you build with the student, gratitude for what you do, seeing your student's motivation and self-confidence grow.
We are looking for home mentors in Amsterdam, Diemen and Zaandam.
